Basic concrete refugio at 14,000 feet (4,260 m) at the base of Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak and North America's 3rd-highest. Three levels of wooden bunks, sleeps 40 to 50. No water, no facilities. Free, no reservations, shared with whoever else is on the mountain. Access: 4WD shuttle from Tlachichuca (2 hrs). Staging for 5,636-meter summit attempts.
