Tantalus Hut at Lake Lovely Water

The ACC built this two-storey cabin at the outflow of Lake Lovely Water in 1961 and it is still the base for climbing in the Tantalus Range. The catch is the approach: there is no bridge and no road to the trailhead, so every trip starts by crossing the Squamish River by jet boat or canoe, then 1,140 m of climbing in about 5 km with fixed cables on the steep pitches. The ACC does not arrange the crossing and issues no refund if you cannot get across. The cable crossing over the river is illegal, Environment Canada owns it and has been pursuing trespass charges. Two sleeping lofts with foam mats for 16, propane and wood stoves, dishes for a full hut. Whole-hut three-night blocks only, and swimming in the lake on a hot August afternoon is the reason most people come back.
