Notes

The VOC's oldest standing hut, a 1969 gothic arch tucked behind a moraine in Sphinx Bay on the far shore of Garibaldi Lake, fully restored in November 2024 with a new roof, new arches, new floor beams and mouse proofing. The normal way in is 9 km up the Rubble Creek trail then 4.7 km straight across the frozen lake on a bearing of 111 degrees, so February through April is the window and thin ice at creek mouths is the real hazard. The hut is not visible from the lake, it sits 70 m back behind the moraine just north of a large creek. No reservations, ever, by club policy, you register instead. Two catalytic heaters burn white gas you carry yourself and recent trip reports keep finding the hut out of fuel. You pay twice, CAD 15 to the VOC and a BC Parks wilderness camping permit on top, and the permit applies to VOC members too. Skiing off Guard Pass and the Sphinx Glacier is why people come, but it is nearly treeless, so a whiteout ends the day.
