Julian Harrison Hut

A gothic A-frame from 1983 on the north edge of the Pemberton Icefield, named for Julian Harrison after the former VOC president was killed in an avalanche that April. It is the club's most remote hut and the approach is the whole story. The current 11.9 km trail from Perkins Main was hand built by VOC members between 2010 and 2014, went unsafe after washouts, and was restored in June 2025; the club still expects most parties to take two days because there is a 7.5 km uphill road walk to reach the trailhead. Trip reports through August 2026 have the hut clean, stocked and in good condition. Road access is the real gatekeeper: the 2 km gate on Lillooet South FSR closes for grizzly season and for roughly 40 more days a year when landslide risk is extreme, and the gate at 24 km has needed a key. Mount Meager across the valley produced one of the largest landslides in Canadian history in 2010 and Pika Creek still throws rock, so cross it and keep walking. Bears are everywhere here, travel in threes and hang food at the 4.9 km campsite. No reservations, $15 CAD per person in the blue drop box. Winter means a helicopter or a multi day Pemberton Icecap traverse, and the VOC puts heli parties second in line behind anyone who skis in.
